When times are hard, not many have the time and money to have manicured gardens. In addition, not all people spend on expensive grass cutters and electric mowers either. So it’s a good idea to purchase one of the used reel mowers sold online or elsewhere, especially when you have a relatively smaller lawn. Reel mowers, although operated manually, provide numerous advantages. They’re quiet, economical, compact, they cut grass well, and they don’t blow exhaust on your face while mowing the lawn.
But you must be wary when purchasing used reel mowers. If they’re not brand new then there has to be some considerations to be made. Basically, you must inspect if the cylindrical blades of the reel mowers are free from rust. Used reel mowers are often kept for long periods of time or overused such that the blades have become dull. So pay attention to the blades. You wouldn’t want get caught up row after row or have grass that’s unevenly cut. If the used reel mowers are reconditioned, then that would be great. That shows that the main components have been put back in shape. Ask about the possible problems that the mower may bring about sooner or later.
When choosing used reel mowers, it’s also good to ask about the weight. Modern reel mowers are light and very efficient. The old ones are not as easy to use and takes longer time. So consider the age of the used mower and ask for the year when it was purchased. If possible, test the mower you have selected. There are mowers that weight around 40 lbs. or heavier. But if you’re lucky, there are some that can weigh less than 20lbs. So let cutting power and weight meet halfway for excellent results.
Another factor that must remembered regarding used reel mowers is the type of the grass to cut. Unlike modern electric mowers, reel mowers are not capable of doing an all-around job in the garden. Reel mowers are not recommended for weedy grasses as some are too low. If it’s a razor-cut reel mower, then it’s likely sharp enough to cut tall and thick grasses including Zoysia and St. Augstine. Low-cutting reel mowers are ideal for trimming Bermuda grass. Modern reel movers however, regardless of size, can actually cut anything and leave fine grass. So again, find modern versions of reel mowers if you may.
